1995: Second prize: ‘Tilburg Modern Industrial City Award for Sustainable Development’ by the City of Tilburg

2000: Nomination:   ‘Brabant Award for Innovation’ by the Province of North Brabant

2001: First prize:

The Egg of Columbus – The Dutch National Award for Innovation and Sustainable Development, awarded by the Dutch Ministries of Environmental Management and of Education in 2001 because of Roorda's Cirrus Project. From the Jury Report:

"Many projects have recently started in the Netherlands with the aim to integrate sustainable development into curricula or operations. The Cirrus Project excels in the eyes of the Jury, because of the wide ambition (aiming both at curricula of many existing study programs and at institution operations) and the impact on the professional practice. The Jury hopes that the project results will be widely distributed, to other faculties and universities."

2018: Netherlands' Sustainable Lecturer of the year (Category: Higher Education)

This honor was awarded by the Coöperatie Leren voor Morgen  (Cooperation Learning for Tomorrow), of which many organizations for nature, the environment and education are members. The Jury wrote:

"Niko Roorda has been elected Sustainable Lecturer 2018 (Higher Education) because he has developed a lot of educational material that is used continuously in the sustainable higher education of the Netherlands. The jury is impressed by the impact in the Netherlands of Niko's work. Much of what is permanently used in the Netherlands for sustainability in higher education has been developed by Niko Roorda. For example, he wrote the textbook 'Fundamentals for Sustainable Development' and developed an audit tool for sustainable development in higher education [AISHE]. Because of his huge record of service for the past 20 years, Niko Roorda will become Sustainable Lecturer 2018."
