This honor was awarded by the Coöperatie Leren voor Morgen (Cooperation Learning for Tomorrow), of which many organizations for nature, the environment and education are members. The Jury wrote:

"Niko Roorda is gekozen tot "Duurzame Docent 2018 (Hoger Onderwijs) omdat hij veel onderwijsmateriaal heeft ontwikkeld dat blijvend gebruikt wordt in het duurzame hoger onderwijs van Nederland. De jury is onder de indruk van de impact dat het werk van Niko in Nederland heeft.
Veel van wat in Nederland permanent wordt gebruikt voor duurzaamheid in het hoger onderwijs is ontwikkeld door Niko Roorda. Zo schreef hij het Basisboek Duurzame Ontwikkeling en ontwikkelde hij een auditinstrument voor duurzame ontwikkeling in het hoger onderwijs (AISHE). Vanwege zijn enorme staat van dienst in de afgelopen 20 jaar, wordt Niko Roorda docent Duurzaamheid 2018."

"Niko Roorda has been elected Sustainable Lecturer 2018 (Higher Education) because he has developed a lot of educational material that is used continuously in the sustainable higher education of the Netherlands. The jury is impressed by the impact in the Netherlands of Niko's work.
Much of what is permanently used in the Netherlands for sustainability in higher education has been developed by Niko Roorda. For example, he wrote the textbook Fundamentals for Sustainable Development and developed an audit tool for sustainable development in higher education (AISHE). Because of his huge record of service for the past 20 years, Niko Roorda will become Sustainable Lecturer 2018."
