The sculptures on this page are carved by Roorda out of steatite (soapstone, Dutch: speksteen, Mg3Si4O10(OH)2).
This is a relatively soft material because of its high talc content, which has a value of 1 on the Mohs hardness scale.
The material has nothing to do with soap; but it feels a little bit 'soapy' when it is stroked, hence the name. It can easily be sanded and polished. Several sculptures combine polished with rough surfaces.
